If you are in good physical condition and are looking for an inexpensive way to travel around Europe you might want to consider riding a bike around the countryside. To do this you will need to plan ahead and make sure that you know how to travel wisely and safely by bike while taking your holidays in Europe.
Very important thing to remember that everywhere you go in Europe that distance is measured in metrics. So if you don't know the metric system make sure that you have a metrics conversion table with you so that you can gauge how far a certain destination is.
If your pack equipment that your bring with you includes a camp stove it is a very good idea that you have one that will be able to use different kinds of fuels. In Europe you will run into more than just propane and your stove should be able to also use white gas, regular gas, kerosene, etc. Make sure that it states it's compatible with all fuels to be on the safe side.
When you pack, even though you are going to try to pack light you still should have one outfit that is decent, so that you will have a presentable outfit for places like museums, a restaurant that might be nice or even if you want to visit some of the wonderful churches throughout Europe. You should have what you are wearing, extra casual set and then the nicer set of clothing. This way you will always have a clean pair of clothes on when you are washing the other two sets. Make sure that you include some sort of rain attire, even if it's summer, you never know when you might get caught in a summer shower.
Don't expect that all of the camping areas are going to be like the United States where most of them are in nice wide open natural settings with nice natural campsites. Don't be surprised if a lot of the campsites offered in Europe are nothing more than a parking lot type of set up.
Make sure that wherever you go that you notice what times the stores or restaurants close in the town you may be in. These hours will vary from country to country as well as from city to city. So it's always a good idea to make sure that you get any necessary shopping done before five in the evening.
When you visit the larger cities you might want to consider going and spending some time at the hostels instead of trying to find somewhere to camp. They are great places to save money, get some rest and meet a lot of interesting people. It's also a very secure place to lock up all of your traveling gear including your bike.
Even though you will more than likely find a place most anywhere that can repair bikes you still should make sure that you bring extra things like spokes, bungee cords and a basic tire patching kit as well as kits that can repair your chain. This is just in case you run into problems with your bike while you are out in the countryside somewhere.
Wherever you go, make sure that you take care of your bike and that it is locked up securely before you go off anywhere. This is especially true if you are visiting the Eastern European areas. With so much poverty and unemployment in these countries, crime is extremely high.
Make sure that you do have a plan B just in case your bike and equipment are stolen. This means you should carry a copy of your passport and a credit card in your bike shorts or pants. It's always better to be safe than sorry.
