Wow, 80 years old, that's an accomplishment and it's something that should be celebrated. Perhaps some may think that people this age don't care about such frivolous things as birthday parties, you might be surprised however, at how many seniors are still yearning for that birthday party, even if they proclaim they could care less. But it’s the natural urge to want to try and stay young within that cries out for that party and deservedly so. There is no reason why someone who is turning 80 shouldn't be given a great celebration party. Below are a few ideas to help make a party for someone turning 80 fun for everyone, no matter how old they might be.
Themed parties may sound kind of silly for someone of this age, but not if it has to do with a vintage theme. Someone who is turning 80 experienced their youth back in the thirties and forties and the party can revolve around that era. The place in which the party will be held can be decorated from that era and you can ask that all the guests come dressed in clothes that represent that time period. You can also set up all the tables with two board games that came out during that time, and that would be Scrabble and Monopoly. Not only are they great pieces of history from then, but people still enjoy playing them to this very day. It will also give people something fun to do while the party is going on.
You can also set up a game area where you can have a trivia contest that will have questions that are based upon things that happened during this era. You can include historical events and even things from the guest of honor's own personal history as some of the questions. You can give a prize to the person who answers the most questions right as well. This will get people more interested in playing, since everyone loves to win prizes.
You can create a timeline slide show that shows the guest of honor through the years and put it to music that they would have been listening to during that time if at all possible. You can start with baby pictures of them all the way through the present. You can also take some of the pictures and put them in frames and use them as centerpieces for all of the tables. Another thing you can do is create a physical timeline by choosing a wall long enough to put some butcher paper on, draw a straight line across it and them put different dates from their birth date to the present date. Above the line you can put different important events in that person's life during those dates and then below the line you can add historical info that happened on those dates. Add pictures a long the timeline as well. To make it even more fun, allow your guests to add things to the timeline themselves.
If you happen to have a lot of people at the party that might night know each other but know the guest of honor, you might want to get some conversations started with some fun conversation starters. You can put different questions in a cup that they can pick out and ask one another. Make the questions fun and interesting, types of questions that can lead to good conversation.
Final Note: Make the cake special as well. One idea that is good is to make the cake a memory cake. Take an important event in history that they may have experienced and recreate that event on the birthday cake. Or you could use a childhood memory as well. It should however; be something momentous in their lives.
