Chinese Herbal Medicine is Used in All Parts of the World

Chinese herbal medicine has been part of Chinese culture since the time of emperor Shen Nong who showed his people how to use herbs in their diet and for therapy. Today, this type of medicine is used all over the world and even in Brisbane acupuncture clinics and offices. In 1977, the Encyclopedia of Traditional Chinese Medicinal Substances listed that there 5,767 different herbs that were being used all over China. However, a typical practitioner routinely will use between 200 and 600 different ones for medicinal purposes. Today herbal medicines are widely used in all parts of the world.

If you go to see a practitioner in Brisbane that uses Chinese herbal medicine you will discover that there are various different ways in which the herbal medicines can be taken. Water decoctionis is probably the most widely way used however. This is a process that involves adding 1 to 13 medicinal agents in quantities of 1 to 12 grams each to water and then boil this mixture for about 45 minutes. The liquid then is separated from the herbs and the patient drinks the liquid.

They will also offer clients in Brisbane Chinese herbal medicine that is in the form of powdered raw herbs. They also have them in honey pills that are made by combining the powdered herbs with concentrated decoctions and honey that produces a small herbal pill. Sometimes they will use herbal extracts or powders and use coatings and encapsulation methods. There are also some pills that can be found over the counter in many different stores.

Some may wonder if there are any adverse effects from using Chinese herbal medicine and the only thing that seems to come to light is if inappropriate dosages are taken which can cause toxic substance and hypersensitivity reactions. There have been very few cases of any patients suffering from adverse effects due to allergic reactions when the medicine is taken in proper dosages. Much like any medication.

Like any medications, it is vitally important that if a person is taking prescribed medications by their doctor that they consult with their doctor about whether or not there will be any type of drug interactions between their traditional medicine and any herbal medicine they might be considering taking. Their doctor will know best whether or not the herbal medicine can and should be combined with their traditional medicine.
