How to Take Control of Your Life After Beating an Addiction

It doesn't matter what it is, whether you are addicted to alcohol, medication, illegal drugs, you name it, it is a struggle for anyone to try and overcome. However, beating an addiction is not always the hardest part of the problem, it's regaining control over your own life that can be the real issue. For a long time a person may have allowed their addiction to control their life and once they are free to do it themselves it can become as big of a problem as the addiction. The reason for this is that, generally the person became addicted to try and escape from life, because life is tough and it can be very frightening to try and regain control.

The very first thing that you should do if you are trying to regain control of your life is to do everything that you can to avoid the person or people who helped you get addicted to start with. If you go back to being around those kind of people, it can be overwhelmingly difficult for you to stay disconnected from your addiction. So it is best to break off all contact with these people in order for you not to be tempted and to protect the safety of your health and your life.

If you lost a job because of your addiction and with a lot of people this is the case, it's very important that you start looking for a job right away. You need to get a job to give you a way to survive and pay your bills but also it's a way in which you can focus on other things rather than your addiction. It's also a way to help your self esteem as well. Even if it means you need to get a low paying job just to get started again, you need to consider it and do it so that you can give your chance to regain control and then you can look for something better after you've worked for awhile. When in a situation like this you simply can't afford to be picky.

If you happen to be a person that may have been addicted to something that was illegal or even if it were legal medications you may find it hard to stay away from the problem and it might be a good idea if you had someone to talk to about your addiction issues. You need to be able to find someone that you really trust in your family or even a friend that had nothing to do with your addictions. However, if you feel no one in your family or circle of friends will understand your feelings hen you might want to look into finding a counselor that you can talk to. But to be able to stay away from the drugs and regain control, you do need someone you can talk to, someone you can vent with.

Another good thing to do is to join a group and get involved with others who have the same issues and join in different discussions with like minds. Groups that deal with addictions will open your eyes to other people just like you that find themselves in the same situation as you find yourself in. You also can get advice from those who have been clean and sober for years because not only do they understand where you are, where you were, they know where you can go if you put your mind to it because they are living examples.
