To start with you can start off simple by sealing any leaks that you might have around your doors, your windows, window fans and air conditioners, your ducts as well as your pipes. Anything that may lead anywhere outside should be sealed up so that nothings leaks out and nothing comes in. By doing this alone you can save as much as 10% on your heating and cooling expenses for your home.

Another simple thing that you can do to cut down on energy costs is to close any of the vents you might have open in any rooms that are not used or are rarely used. Places like a guest room, formal dining room, extra bathroom, etc. You should also set your thermostats to about 68 degrees during winter months and around 78 degrees during the summer months. Your water heater should be set no higher than 120 degrees as well.

When you are not using small appliances like your microwave, toaster, blender or coffee maker unplug them. You should also always remember to turn off your computer when you are done using it. Even if your small appliances are plugged in they are considered to be on standby and they still are drawing power. You can actually save about $50 each year by doing this.

When you are not in a room make sure to turn off any lights there might be on and you might also want to consider replacing all of your light bulbs with fluorescent compact bulbs. Always make sure that when you buy a new appliance that they come with the Energy Star rating. These are simple things you can do to help cut down on your energy usage.

If it's at all possible you should consider using a laptop more often than a desktop computer. The laptop actually just 10% as much energy as your desktop uses. You should also use ink jet printers over laser printers because these too use only 10% as much energy as lasers do. You may also want to consider downsizing your monitor size. For instance if you downsize to a 14 inch monitor from a 17 inch you are going to be using 35% less energy. Same thing goes for televisions as well.

When you are driving your car, make sure you keep it in as good of condition that you can for fuel economy efficiency. You should also try to avoid hard braking a long with quick acceleration with your car. You can actually cut down on your gas mileage by 5% just by doing this little bit, in the city and you can save up to 33% on the highway when you follow this rule. It's also a good idea to use cruise control on the highway if you have it.

Do your best to keep your car driving at a speed of less than 60 miles per hour. Every car is different but most cars will have better fuel efficiency if their speeds are kept at 60 or below. For every five miles per hour your reduce your car will translate into about 10 to 15 percent less at the gas pump for each gallon of gas.

Make sure that you put in the right oil for your car. This means you need to make sure that you know what the proper grade is for your car and use only that grade. You should also make sure that your tires are always properly inflated.
