Living in a Nursing Home? Fun Things To Do When Living In a Supported Care Facility! |
When we are younger we sometimes forget that we're not the only ones that like to have fun. We often forget that those who find themselves living in a facility such as a nursing home still want to be able to enjoy themselves. If you happen to work in one of these facilities you might discover that a lot of those who live there soon find it difficult to stay young thinking and feeling because they are limited to what they can do or what is offered for them to do. You might consider getting together with the staff and those in charge and offer some of these ideas to help the residents there have more fun.
One thing which is always a nice thing to do and doesn't take much energy to do, and is a lot of fun is having scrapbooking sessions. This is a great way for the elderly to go over a lot of fun memories and put them together in colorful and attractive scrapbooks. This is something good to get volunteers to sit down and do with the seniors. Some may need help with the finer details due to arthritis in their hands and poor eyesight. But they will still enjoy going through all of their old pictures and picking out the ones that they can compile in a book that can be looked at over and over again. If you think that teens are the only ones that love prom night, you'd be wrong. There is nothing more fun for a lot of seniors than to go back in time and have a mock prom night. You can set up a special room that can be decorated with things that represent the era in which a lot of them went to school and help it look like they are returning to the days of their youth. You can even get nominations for a queen and king of the prom along with other kinds of fun rewards. Maybe there is a particular senior there who has the best sense of humor and they could get voted in as the “Class Clown”. There are a lot of different things that you can come up with to help make the prom more fun. If you want your seniors to dress in formal wear then you can always go around asking for donations from people for the formal wear so that there will be these items available to them so that they can look and feel the part. Also make sure to find volunteers that can help the ladies get ready for the prom with hair and their accessories. You can have corsages made from paper if you don't want to spend the money on real flowers and make sure that you pick out music that was being played when they were teens. You can also get a volunteer to be a photographer and take prom pictures of the happy couples. Just because people get old, doesn't mean they don't have some sort of talent, which means another good thing you could do that everyone will enjoy is to put on a talent show. This is not just entertaining for the seniors but also for guests and the staff as well. Have tryouts with the patients and get a variety of acts together from dancing to drama. Let the seniors be creative and showcase the talents they were born with. You may even consider advertising the event and get people from the community and have them come and enjoy the variety of talent that your nursing home has to offer. |

Looking Young Longer - How to Find the Right Anti-Aging Cream! |
There are so many different companies out there claiming that their anti-aging cream is the best, the one for you. But, how do you really know which one is going to do what you want it to do? This can be a hard thing to figure out and can cause you to waste a lot of money if you end up buying the wrong products. Here are a few tips on helping you try to find the right cream that will be best for your needs.
The most important thing you can do when looking for an anti-aging cream is to figure out exactly what kind of skin that you have. You need to know if it's dry, oily, normal or a combination of oily and dry. Important thing to note here is that as you age your skin type will generally change. You may have oily skin when you are younger but when you start to age it may end up dry or turn to normal. Different types of skins are going to require different things and this is why it's important you get the cream that fits the type of skin that you have. For skin that is dry you want to look for the creams that might offer more nourishing elements that the other creams and for a person with normal skin you may just need a cream that helps to maintain the levels of moisture in the skin. However, if it's oily or a combination a person might want one that will absorb the extra oil and still hydrate the skin at the same time. The next thing you will want to do is to figure out which areas of the skin you want the cream to target. Are you going to want it to reduce any crows feet you might have that's around your eyes or is it the wrinkles that are beginning to form on your forehead? Each person has a different aging problem and they need products that can address those individual problems. So, you need to sit down and make a list of the different needs of your skin and then you can look at the different products to see what they offer. This may mean that you end up buying more than one product to address your different needs. When you go out shopping for the products you need to make sure that you read the ingredients that are used in making the anti-aging cream. You need to make sure that they really do contain items that will help keep the skin from aging quickly. Different kinds of ingredients do different things. Make sure that the ingredients are truly clinically proven to work as well. If you are looking for a product that will help with wrinkles and fine lines make sure that the ingredients include Retinol and Tretinoin. If you are looking something to tighten the skin then you need a product that contains Alpha-Hydroxy acids in them. Another important thing is to set yourself a budget on how much you are willing to spend for these creams. You need to know how much you are willing to dish out before you go shopping for them. This way you will already be narrowing down which products you will be looking at. When you consider your budget you should add in the factor that most of the products you buy will probably last you around three months. |

Let's face it, none of us are going to stay young forever, it's that simple, we grow up, we get old and that is the simple facts of life. That doesn't mean we need to give up the minute we finally realize that there is no way of stopping the aging process! Heck no! Take care of yourself the best that you can so that you can continue to enjoy life in the face of aging.
It's important that you do some sort of exercise as often as you can handle it. Even the smallest amount of exercise on a regular basis is better than none at all. Make sure that you eat good. It's important that you try and maintain a balanced diet one that is filled with fruits, veggies, different kinds of nuts and seeds and fish oil or omega 3 acids. Some of the best things you can include in your diet are foods like spinach, garlic and blueberries. They are also a great source of vitamin E and some think they will help to ward off diseases like Alzheimer's. Drink lots of fluids. Not just water either, although a good amount of water is required for anyone to stay healthy, but feel free to add coffee, tea and fresh juice to the mix. You should however try to avoid sodas with sugar, prepared juice and keep the alcohol consumption to a minimum. Caring For Your Elderly Parents - Keeping Them Safe While They Still Live At Home |
We will not stay young forever no matter how hard we try and how many anti-aging agents and treatments we use. It is inevitable in the end that aging is going to win. This holds true for your parents as well. As you age so do they, just with a couple of decades head start. It's important to remember that your parents as they get older are going to need a little more help and you may need to be there for them, just as they were there for you when you were growing up. It's important to remember that your parents are going to want to stay in their own homes for as long as they can and you should try your best to make sure they can do that by trying to help provide them with a safe environment so that they can do this.
Make sure that you know what all of your parents medical issues are and understand that they may have multiple so it's important that you know about all of them. You also should know who their doctor is so that you can contact the doctor in case you need to. Remember, that even though a lot of things are changing for your elderly parents, as long as they can take care of themselves, such as simple daily activities, they should be allowed to be able to stay in their own homes. You should also go to their home and check out their living environment. Make sure that you check out all of the rooms they have and will be having activities in. According to whatever ailments they might have, you may have to make a few minor adjustments in order to make some areas safer than others, especially in the bathroom where slips and falls are quite common especially with the elderly. Add safety bars in the shower or tub and if they happen to have stairs that have no railings, then consider adding some railings for them to make it easier for them to navigate. Also make sure that there is good lighting in the entire house and that all of their locks on their doors are in good working order. If their home is cluttered, it's a good idea to make sure that you try to clear some of the clutter away for them. Take out any throw rugs that might be in the way of their walking paths because they could easily trip on a rug that might be rumpled up and this could end in an unnecessary injury. If they are using a walker, cane or even a wheelchair, make sure there is plenty of room in the home to be able to maneuver in the house with these objects. Check and make sure that all fire hazards are taken care of. Make sure that their stove is in good working condition and is safe to cook on. Cut down on them having to cook meals every day on the stove by occasionally cooking for them or making extras at home and inviting them over or taking them a few meals cooked a head of time that all they will have to do is warm up in the microwave. You should also convince them to stop using space heaters if they are, these can be huge fire hazards. Make sure that you call them often or just stop by on occasion to make sure they are doing OK and to see if there is anything you might be able to do for them. Never just assume that everything is going great just because they haven't called you. They may be too proud to ask for help or unable to get to the phone to call for help. If you notice any kind of mental or physical changes in them, it's important that you call their doctor right away, it could be nothing but then again it could be very serious. The elderly tend to have quick and sudden changes happen to them and without warning so it's important to pay close attention and get help if needed. Keep all of their important phone numbers posted wherever there is a phone so that they do not have to be searching for a number when they need to get someone to help them or need advice on something. |

Nutrition For Seniors - How Seniors Can Thrive on Nutritious Super Foods! |
When you get older a lot of things begin to change and that even includes the type of nutrition that is required. As you get older you are not going to need as many calories but the calories that you do eat need to be from the healthier types of food or super foods. It is an unfortunate reality that we all have to get old but there is no reason for us to not try to stay healthy and stay young feeling for as long as we can and some of these foods can help you do just that.
There are a lot of different reasons that an older person can become malnourished. It can be from some sort of illness, the fact that they have less money to buy food with, because depression has set in, the type of medicine they may have and simply not knowing some of the reasons why they get malnourished. If a person tries to do some sort of exercise during the day will help increase their appetite so they will eat more and will also make them feel better. Supplements can also help in areas where they might be lacking in nutrition. Eating healthier as a senior makes a lot of sense and those around seniors should reach out and make sure that they are doing this. Understand that when someone begins to age that a lot of things may come with it like sickness, problems with families and of course the lack of money to get the right foods. It's a good idea to make sure that when you get older that you start filling up that refrigerator with lots of different bright and colorful fruits and veggies. You need to make sure first that they are the ones you like and are going to eat of course. Some of the super foods that you might want to keep on hand would be spinach, kale, peppers (red, green, yellow), broccoli, tomatoes and extremely heart friendly avocado. Some of the super food fruits are oranges, apricots, all types of melons, different kinds of berries, peaches as well as all varieties of apples. All of these foods are packed with vitamins and minerals that your body needs and they make great in between meal snacks as well. Try and plan your meals around these super foods. Some super food proteins and dairy items are fish especially salmon and halibut. You should try and fix yourself something with fish at least 2 or 3 times a week. You also might want to keep cans of salmon or tuna around when you are in need of a meal that won't take any time to fix. Also chicken breast is a super food that can be cooked in a variety of different ways. Other meats you should make sure they are only of lean cuts. You should make sure you eat yogurt and low fat milk as well for the health of your bones. Even if you are on a tight budget you can still get the super foods that you need to make a nutritional diet. For instance you can get a bunch of these veggies and make a large pot of soup and freeze the rest into smaller portion sizes for eating at a later date. You can do the same thing by making large amounts of homemade stew which is hearty and good for you. It's always a good idea to try and keep stocked up on foods that are not only high in nutritional value but are also easy for you to cook. When there is only one or two of you sometimes it almost doesn't seem worth the chore of cooking so try to keep the recipes simple. Final note: Always try to keep on hand healthy snack foods like nuts, baked chips, and whole grain crackers. These are quick and give you the nutrition needed and serve as quick pick me ups during the day. |

Great Party Ideas for Celebrating Someone Who is Turning 80 Years Old! |
Wow, 80 years old, that's an accomplishment and it's something that should be celebrated. Perhaps some may think that people this age don't care about such frivolous things as birthday parties, you might be surprised however, at how many seniors are still yearning for that birthday party, even if they proclaim they could care less. But it’s the natural urge to want to try and stay young within that cries out for that party and deservedly so. There is no reason why someone who is turning 80 shouldn't be given a great celebration party. Below are a few ideas to help make a party for someone turning 80 fun for everyone, no matter how old they might be.
Themed parties may sound kind of silly for someone of this age, but not if it has to do with a vintage theme. Someone who is turning 80 experienced their youth back in the thirties and forties and the party can revolve around that era. The place in which the party will be held can be decorated from that era and you can ask that all the guests come dressed in clothes that represent that time period. You can also set up all the tables with two board games that came out during that time, and that would be Scrabble and Monopoly. Not only are they great pieces of history from then, but people still enjoy playing them to this very day. It will also give people something fun to do while the party is going on. You can also set up a game area where you can have a trivia contest that will have questions that are based upon things that happened during this era. You can include historical events and even things from the guest of honor's own personal history as some of the questions. You can give a prize to the person who answers the most questions right as well. This will get people more interested in playing, since everyone loves to win prizes. You can create a timeline slide show that shows the guest of honor through the years and put it to music that they would have been listening to during that time if at all possible. You can start with baby pictures of them all the way through the present. You can also take some of the pictures and put them in frames and use them as centerpieces for all of the tables. Another thing you can do is create a physical timeline by choosing a wall long enough to put some butcher paper on, draw a straight line across it and them put different dates from their birth date to the present date. Above the line you can put different important events in that person's life during those dates and then below the line you can add historical info that happened on those dates. Add pictures a long the timeline as well. To make it even more fun, allow your guests to add things to the timeline themselves. If you happen to have a lot of people at the party that might night know each other but know the guest of honor, you might want to get some conversations started with some fun conversation starters. You can put different questions in a cup that they can pick out and ask one another. Make the questions fun and interesting, types of questions that can lead to good conversation. Final Note: Make the cake special as well. One idea that is good is to make the cake a memory cake. Take an important event in history that they may have experienced and recreate that event on the birthday cake. Or you could use a childhood memory as well. It should however; be something momentous in their lives. |

How To Help Out And Be a Friend To A Home Bound Senior Citizen |
We all want to stay young forever, face it, we all do, and when we are young and vibrant we probably do think that will be the case. Young people never stop to think that all of this youth will be gone far sooner than expected and they go through life never realizing that things will quickly change and there is no way to stop it. Eventually our physical as well as our mental capabilities are going to lessen and we may be sitting in front of the mirror one day and not even recognize the person we've become. It's the stark reality staring back at us that has us finally understand that the years have caught up to us and there's no turning back.
Seniors may find themselves no longer able to do the things they did before, they may find themselves alone because their spouse has passed away. This can lead to fear, loneliness and isolation. If you know of a senior who might be alone and home bound, why not considering giving a helping hand and becoming a friend to someone that will truly appreciate even the slightest smile that will give them comfort. Get to know the person that you want to help if they are not a family member. If they are a family member then you've already shared parts of your lives together and use that to be able to sit down with them and reminisce about things. If it's a person like a neighbor you are befriending then sit down with them and ask them to talk about things from their past, the present and their future. Let them express their fears, listen and let them know you care. This will give you a chance to bond with them. You should also sit down with them and figure out what their needs are. Do they need help going to the doctor appointments, do they need groceries or can you help them clean up around the house? While you are visiting with them be alert and visually figure out what kind of help you think that you might be able to offer them. At all times, remember to treat them with respect. Understand that most seniors are going to be far too proud to even consider asking for help and this is why so many of them go without. They are so used to being able to take care of themselves and then when suddenly they cant' they will turn to anger or depression instead of turning to someone to ask for help. So do your best to respect their feelings but let them know at the same time you are more than willing to lend them a helping hand. Everyone deserves dignity and seniors are no exception. If you treat them like a child instead of an adult this is not only a hurtful thing to do but it can also be a harmful thing to do. Unless you have walked in their shoes you have absolutely no idea what they are going through or what they are feeling about the situation that they now find themselves in. If you don't make a big deal out of something they can no longer do without help, they are going to feel a lot better about themselves. Once you get to know the person better they are going to feel a lot more comfortable with you and they will be more willing to let you into their world by sharing their stories with you and letting you know what things gave them and still give them pleasure. If a person was an avid gardener for example this could be an immediate clue for you to go out and get them a nice fresh bouquet of flowers to brighten up their home. Little things like that you can pick up on to put a smile on their face. Make sure that you don't make promises that you can't keep. It is important that you show your senior friend that you are true to your word. You need to show them that you have integrity and that you mean what you say. This is the quickest way for them to gain trust in you. Don't promise more than you can honestly deliver and let them know if there are things you aren't able to do, more than likely they will not only understand but will probably give you a few words of kindness and compassion on top of it. Let your senior friend know that even if you can't always be there at their home that they can always give you a call and when you make that promise make sure that you answer the phone when you see it is your senior friend. Remember you might be the only thing in their lives that they have to look forward to. Because your senior is home bound it's a good idea that you try to plan for an occasional outing together. Even if they are in a wheelchair you can take them outside for a stroll around the block or you can take them to a park and enjoy the change of scenery. Any little thing you can do to change up their scenery will be much appreciated by them - even if it is just sitting with them on the porch outside. |

How To Organize a Power of Attorney For You To Help Take Care of The Affairs of Your Elderly Parent |
The day will come when you realize that your parent or parents are no longer going to stay young and the hardest topic of all is going to be facing you and that's the end of life topic. Who is going to take care of all of their business? This is an issue that is very stressful not just for you but for your elderly parent. You need to be able to protect them when they no longer can and that can only be done if you have power of attorney for them.
The first thing you must do is talk to a practicing attorney. A document for a power of attorney is extremely important and you will need a qualified attorney to make sure that all of the laws in your state with regards to power of attorney are strictly met. If not, it's just a worthless piece of paper. When you begin something like this, you need to make sure that your parent is of sound mind and that they fully understand the situation and that they fully agree that you should take on this responsibility. They need to be able to feel like they can trust you. You don't want to force this on them. If they are not able to understand what's going on you won't be able to get a power of attorney. Even if your parent verbally says that they want you to take care of everything for them, means nothing unless it is put down in writing. There are only a few states that will accept anything that is verbal. So you need to make sure that whatever their wishes are, are put down in a legal document to be on file. Your parent must list everything that they want you to be in charge of and then this must be given to an attorney who will then make sure that everything that is listed will be included in this document. Once this is done, you will then need to sign it as well as have your parent or parents sign it. In some states you will also need to have witnesses sign it as well as have it notarized. This is something that should not be taken lightly and you really need to talk to your parents about something like this while they are still half way healthy. Yes, it's a tough subject but it is something that must be done if you want to be able to legally help your parents when they may need you the most. If you do not have something like this in place the state will take over and things that your parents may have wanted may end up going by the wayside. After all the years and pain and tears they put into their lives, the least anyone can do for them is to honor what their last wishes are. |

How To Make Your Own Anti-Aging Treatments For Smoother Looking Skin |
You know when you go out looking for some sort of product that will help smooth your skin and help slow down the skins aging process that you are bombarded with hundreds of different products. All of these products claiming to be better than the other and that theirs is the best for all of your anti-aging needs. A lot of these products however, may contain chemicals that could actually be toxic to your skin and cause you to break out because of an allergic reaction to the chemicals. You can avoid this though by making your own products right in you own home. You'll also save yourself a ton of money in the process.
One item you can make is a an egg mask that is for toning your skin. Take a mixing bowl and whip up one egg with a whisk. Whip the egg until it is nice and frothy. Once it's nice and frothy, make sure that you have washed your skin really well. Then take the whipped egg and apply it right to your skin with your fingers. Let the egg dry totally before removing. Once the egg has completely dried you can then proceed to wash the egg off your face with some very warm to cool water. The egg is going to help tone your skin by shrinking your pores. This is why you don't want to use hot water to remove it. You can also make yourself a scrub that will smooth your skin. You can make this by simply taking three tablespoons of baking soda and combine it with one coup of uncooked oatmeal and mix in a small bowl. After you have mixed the two together you will then add ½ a cup of hot water and mix it all together. Next take the scrub and put in on your face that you have just washed good and massage the scrub into your skin by using a circular motion. Once you are done doing this go ahead and rinse your face with some warm water to remove the scrub. The baking soda has properties in it that will heal and clear your skin and the oatmeal acts as nourishment for the skin and has softening properties. You can also make yourself a natural eye smoother. Take a bowl and mix together one tablespoon of Jojoba oil with one tablespoon of vitamin E oil. Then add a couple of drops of some Rose essential oil. Mix together good and then take your fingers and massage this oil into the skin that is around your eyes. Make sure to do this in gentle circular motions around your eyes. All of these oils will help to reduce the wrinkles around your eyes. One other product you can make at home is a mud mask. You can go to a health food store or a natural foods store and buy some French green clay and put it in a bowl. Put about 2 tablespoons of the clay in the bowl and just drip a little bit of water onto it and mix until the consistency is pretty much like some tin toothpaste. Then add some of the Rose essential oil to the clay. You then will apply this to your clean skin and leave it on your face until it dries completely. Once it has dried go ahead and rinse it off with some water that is warm not cold or hot. The Rose oil will nourish and protect your skin and the clay helps to tighten your skin and shrink the pores. |
